There are 6 main sizes of mattresses available for children and adults, but not every mattress fits every person or space. Finding the right sheets and covers can also be a consideration, as some mattress sizes are more popular than others and are easier to dress. Here is an overview of the 6 types and when they are the best choice for you.
The Twin, or Single, is the bed most commonly used by children who have grown beyond the need for a crib. Measuring a standard 39-inch by 75-inches, these mattress and box spring sets are generally affordable and are easy to move up and down stairs. Another plus to this mattress size is that finding sheets is easy because it is so standard.
The Twin Extra Long, or Twin XL, adds 5-inches to the length of the mattress and fits most teens and adults. This single sleeper mattress is found in dormitories and hostels. It can be slightly harder to find sheets for this bed as it is not as popular as the Twin and outside of an institutional setting, is rare to find in a home. Most teenagers are interested in a wider bed than require a longer mattress for comfort. The mattress is as easy to move up stairs as the Twin, but the length of the box spring can cause difficulties, learn more here.
The Full, or Double, mattress is most commonly found in teenager’s rooms and guest rooms. It is also the mattress used in hotels that advertise singles. It is 15-inches wider than a Twin mattress but shorter than the Twin Extra Long. While not the most popular mattress size, finding bed clothes for this mattress is not difficult. It is also not very difficult to move this mattress set up and down stairs although the added width can slow down moving the box spring with ease.
The most common mattress size is the Queen. The Queen size is as long as the Twin Extra Long and 6-inches wider than the full sized mattress. It can fit two adults. Bedding for this size is easy to find, however, manufacturers tend to combine the bedding size for the Queen and Full mattress resulting in an imperfect fit on either. It is best to find sheets that are sized for queen only. This bed set takes patience to move around a house or apartment, but it is a comfortable fit in most rooms.
The King and California King are the largest mattresses of all. They are difficult to move and to fit into most rooms. Both are wider than the Queen, but the California King is longer. Finding sheets for these mattresses may require a special order.
